Monterey, CA – On Tuesday, May 25, 2010 the Monterey County Hospitality
Association held its 14th Annual Employee Appreciation Day at the Monterey
Fairgrounds. The event celebrated the hospitality workforce of Monterey
County, the unsung heroes who make our community a premier destination.
The employees were treated to a fun day of recreation, competition and
camaraderie. This year 850 attendees showed up to rally their teams in
Monterey’s own version of the World Cup Soccer and team events between
MCHA member businesses.
A little rainfall did not stifle the Soccer or the activities. Under the
watchful eyes of Mazda Raceway’s Connor and Melvyn a soccer tournament
weaved it’s way through teams, goals and to the eventual winner of the
second annual tournament- The Portola Hotel and Spa.
During the day, employees participated in recreational activities that
include kayaking, whale watching, golf, movie tours and visiting area
attractions such as the Monterey Bay Aquarium and the Sports Center. Mazda
Raceway Laguna Seca provided 2400 tickets to The American LeMans races on
Sunday 23rd and MST provided free weekly bus passes.
Thanks to all of our sponsors who provided the opportunity to do
recreational activities at no charge.
Paula Calvetti and an army of volunteers provided delivery of the food
component for the day which the General Managers then prepared under the
watchful eyes of Tom Glidden and Gordon Chin.
After the recreation activities, “friendly” competitions between area
hotels and restaurants took place to award first place bragging rights.
The competition results for bed making, food & beverage, bellman,
bartender and napkin folding are listed later.
Congratulations to the “Overall Winner for Excellence in Service”. This
year the Monterey Plaza Hotel and Spa beat the best of the best in
competitions to take home the annual trophy. Well done John Narigi and his
team.
This year a very special annual award was presented to recognize team
spirit.
“The Gloria” is a perpetual award and is to be given to the team or group
of individuals who demonstrate the best team spirit. The award was given
to honor Gloria McPherson, who began the competition 14 years ago.
Congratulations to Bernardus Lodge, winners of the first annual award.
Congratulations to Julie Weaver from the Lodge at Pebble Beach for her
fine napkin folding expertise and winning the General Manager’s
competition.
Thanks for the support of Corporate Kids and My Museum who kept the
younger audience occupied. Of course, DJ Derek Brown rocked everyone else
with his great tunes.
We all felt adequately supported by Monterey Bay Urgent Care. And the
Monterey Fairgrounds staff were a big help.
There are so many participants in this glorious day, and it would not be
possible without the support of volunteers. These are some of the key players: Paula Calvetti, Michelle Knight, Gill Campbell, Ken Lofink, Francine Sullivan ,
Jeanne Sumners, John Lloyd, Bob Lippi, Carol Chorbajian, Marietta Bain,
Mike Oprish, Sheriff Mike Kanalakis, Chris Chidlaw, Bonnie Adams, Vicki
Tackett, Gloria George, Sondra Woods, Georgette Cash, Tom Glasure, Cathy
Sampognaro, Monica Moore, Mike Bekker, Gloria McPherson, John Turner, and
myself Gerard Mattimoe.
Thank you to all of the volunteers not listed.
Please let us know how we can improve the day, and get ready to volunteer
in June 2011.
