Tuesday, June 2nd, saw the Monterey County Hospitality Association hold its 13th Annual Employee Appreciation Day at the Monterey Fairgrounds. This fun day of recreation, competition and camaraderie for our hardworking employees in the hospitality industry was topped up by the 1st Annual Hospitality Soccer Tournament. Hospitality staff from Monterey County hotels, restaurants and businesses enjoyed kayaking at Monterey Bay Kayaks and Adventures by the Sea; equestrian exploits at Pebble Beach Trail Rides, golf from Bayonet and Blackhorse and Quail Lodge Resort, whale watching with Chris’ Fishing and Randy’s Fishing, Monterey Bay Aquarium tickets, Monterey Sports Center tickets, and a host of other fun events, delivered to their destination courtesy of MST transit, who provided bus service.
The finest General Managers from our local Monterey County resorts rallied their teams to compete and win the coveted trophies in categories of Bed Making, Bartending Best Mai Tai, Best Specialty Drink,, Napkin Folding, Bell Staff race, Chili Competition and Food Service. Those General Managers then went on to show their technique and talent, with Quail Lodge’s Sarah Cruse, our MCHA president, taking the award as the swiftest bell person. Well done Sarah.
Congratulations to team Portola Hotel and Spa. Betty Hutchins and Janine Chicourrat take home the annual trophy as the overall competition winners (see results for all competitions).
This year, Lars Stokkebye, Monterey Plaza Hotel & Spa organized a fun filled Soccer tournament on two fields with 12 teams. Well done Lars, for a fantastic job, supported by Melvyn Record and Connor Barr, on loan from Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. Lars coincidentally lifted the trophy after his team, Monterey Plaza Hotel and Spa defeated The InterContinental, The Clement Monterey. Congratulations all teams and especially the Plaza.
The increased volume of attendees put pressure on our fearless ground staff headed by Ken Lofink, drink outlets with Carol Chorbajian, raffles with Sherry St. Clair and the excellent BBQ team headed by Tom Glidden, Gordon Chin, John Lloyd, Mike Oprish, Mike Bekker and Bob the Printer. The BBQ team did a fine job and managed to knock out 1340 meals for the attendants. Great job and a record BBQ!.
Where would this day have been without Chris Chidlaw, who bounced back and forth between competitions, tastings and soccer? Yes Chris had to learn the meaning of Futbol! Thanks to all of the efforts of the local hotels, restaurants and businesses. Thanks for the hours of donated hard work of these business leaders, and thank you for all of the donated food and drinks. A huge thank you to Betty Hutchins and to Paula Calvetti, who never stopped organizing food supplies and pick ups for Marietta Bain to deliver.
Hotels and teams streamed in continuously, and each one met with the check in headed up by Michelle Curtice of Bernardus Lodge and Cathy Sampagnoro for The Clement. Great job! A big thanks to Corporate Kids Events. The kids really enjoyed the fun activities and had a great time.
The fantastic team from Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca headed by Gill Campbell worked hand in hand with Michelle Knight, from Adventures by the Sea to organize the busiest schedule of teams yet, and judges who checked competition rules and kept the games on track. Rolf Trautsch and Jim Harris once again provided the accounting skills necessary for this huge undertaking.
Dru Mattimoe, experienced judge from The World Chili Cook off, along with Tony Baker from Montrio judged the very best Chilis and the biggest turn out yet. After the attendees enjoyed free chili with toppings. Congratulations team Highlands Inn for their winning effort.
Thanks to DJ Derek, DJ Mr. Bizz. This guy has been rocking the crowd superbly for years. As with all of the volunteers and those who have provided their time at no cost, thank you very much. We should recognize you all for your charity and remember where to send our friends to promote your business. Thank you to the fantastic Committee members listed here:
